The clean, straightforward design of the 2020 Audi A5 is let down only by the turbo model’s excessive add-ons.

2020 Audi A5 Redesign, Price and Review

When it first hit the streets way back in 2007, the Audi A5 was a revelation. Sterile and uncluttered styling anchored the sophisticated coupe; the restrained bodywork lent it an air of elegance when compared to the similarly-sized sausages from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. For 2020, the sophomore year for the all-new second-generation car, the dapper A5 continues to impress valet drivers and country club snobs alike.

What’s New for 2020

The A5 sees no noteworthy changes for 2020, as it follows close on the heels of the fully redesigned 2018 model.

Choosing Your Audi A5

As with last year, three body styles anchor the A5 lineup: the traditional Coupe, an open-air Cabriolet, and a smart-looking four-door Sportback. That third body style might seem like a rather odd option, being that the A5 is meant as the two-door variant of the A4, but it’s been brought aboard to do battle with the hip four-door coupes that have been coming into vogue as of late. Audi also builds the A5 in the hotter S5 and searing RS5 variants, but those models are covered separately. READ ~ Tiguan 2019 Mpg Pricing

All three body shells are draped over a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. In typical Audi fashion, the power is delivered to all four wheels with the brand’s famed Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Europe gets the opportunity to row a six-speed manual, but a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission does the dirty work of shifting gears here in the US.

A four-year/50,000-mile warranty and one-year/10,000-mile maintenance plan are included with the A5. The Coupe and Sportback share pricing, while Cabriolet models are $7,000 more for each of the three trims:

Premium

The A5 Premium carries a sticker price of $45,195 (all prices include the $995 destination charge). Buyers get to indulge in standard-issue technology like a power trunk (power hatch for the Sportback), multiple drive modes, a connectivity package, and cloud-based concierge services. Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking are included at no extra charge. Besides the technological razzle dazzle, the A5 also comes with features like ambient LED lighting, tri-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, 18-inch wheels, and heated and power-adjustable exterior mirrors.

The primary option is the $1,500 Convenience package that adds eight-way power front seats, keyless entry and remote start, auto-dimming exterior mirrors with memory, and SiriusXM radio. There are also 19-inch wheels available for $1,050. On Sportback models, a $1,000 S line sport package that bundles unique 18-inch wheels, front sport seats with four-way power lumbar, and S line trim and badging is available.

Premium Plus

The middle child A5 is called the Premium Plus, which starts at $49,595. The extra cash spent over the Premium nets blind-spot monitoring, rear collision mitigation, keyless entry and remote start, and wireless charging as well as a cellular signal booster. A 12.3-inch fully digital gauge cluster is also included. The customizable interface boasts up to 1,920 by 720 pixels of crisp digital readouts that refresh up to 60 times a second. Working in conjunction with the virtual cockpit is a larger 8.3-inch infotainment unit with navigation. Using Google Maps, the system can call up Google Earth or Google Streetview for a detailed look at any potential destination or route. A touchpad allows users to write their commands as well as mouse over to their desired selections.

For those seeking a more sinister look, the $1,950 Black optic plus package accentuates the A5’s character with midnight tones. Black 19-inch wheels, badging, spoiler, and interior trim all help in blacking out the A5. The money spent also buys a sport suspension, contrasting blue stiching, a three-spoke sport steering wheel, summer performance tires, and stainless steel pedals. Other available options are a $950 Bang & Olufsen sound system with 19 speakers, $1,050 19-inch wheels, $800 ventilated seats, and a $200 heated and multifunction steering wheel. The S line sport package returns unchanged on Sportback Premium Plus models, while a $2,100 Luxury package is available on Cabriolet models. It bundles ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel with shift paddles, a neck-level heating system, and front sport seats with four-way power lumbar.

Prestige

The A5 tops out with the Prestige model, which starts at $53,295. It offers the gamut of Audi’s technologies, such as a head-up display, automatic parking assist, the 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, and adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist functionality. Options match those of the Premium Plus across the three body styles, with the exception of the high-end stereo that has been made standard.

The best value in 2020 Audi A5 is a base model with manual gearbox, but it’s still decently priced after adding fancy audio, leather, and a moonroof.
