There aren’t a lot of choices with the Lexus LX 570. If you don’t need the third row of seats, get the two-row because you’ll get a larger cargo space and save a bit of money in the process. For the three-row LX 570, we suggest skipping the rear-seat entertainment system because its screens prevent the second-row seats from sliding all the way forward for rear-seat access.

Although SUVs are often associated with outdoor recreation and going off-road, the reality is that only a few of them are truly capable of bouncing over rocks and gullies. And of those, there are even fewer that can be considered luxurious. As such, the 2020 Lexus LX 570 is quite the rare beast. The LX 570 can conquer punishing terrain while surrounding occupants in a comfortable cocoon of leather and rich wood trim.

But there are some trade-offs for the LX’s all-terrain capabilities. It’s not as confident-handling on pavement as some of its main rivals, and it’s certainly not as pleasant as conventional SUVs that are intended for on-road use. Age is partially responsible for the LX 570’s drawbacks. The LX was last redesigned in 2008, which is positively ancient for a vehicle. In the 11 years since, other automakers have reworked their SUVs and given them newer technology that improves comfort, convenience, capability and efficiency.

Good examples include Land Rover’s Range Rover and Discovery. They deliver more of everything, save for Lexus’ reputation for reliability. And if you don’t need over-the-top off-road capability, the new Lincoln Navigator wins out with its fresher curbside appeal and lower price. The 2020 Lexus LX 570 is undoubtedly a capable and luxurious SUV, but we think it will be worth your time to shop around a little before making a decision.

2020 Lexus LX 570 configurations

The 2020 Toyota LX 570 is a luxury SUV offered in two configurations: a standard three-row version that seats eight or a two-row LX 570 that seats five.

Both come with a 5.7-liter V8 (383 horsepower, 403 pound-feet of torque) paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system. An adaptive suspension that is height-adjustable and automatic load leveling are also standard. Other standard mechanical components include 20-inch wheels, Crawl Control (a low-speed off-road cruise control), Multi-Terrain Select (off-road vehicle settings) and hill start assist.

Standard exterior features include automatic LED exterior lighting, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors, automatic wipers, windshield wiper de-icers, running boards, a tow hitch and a power liftgate.

Electronic driver aids include standard forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert systems, lane departure warning, full-speed adaptive cruise control, a drowsy driver warning system, an automatic parking system, multiview parking cameras, and Lexus Enform Safety Connect emergency communications.

Interior comfort and convenience features include a sunroof, keyless ignition and entry, four-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, power-adjustable front seats, driver-seat memory settings and a 40/20/40-split second-row seat (folding, reclining, power-sliding and heated). The three-row LX 570 also has a power-operated 50/50-split third-row seat that folds up against the cargo area sides.

Infotainment features includes the Lexus Remote Touch interface (a 12.3-inch center display with center console mouselike controller), a navigation system, Bluetooth, a USB port, the Lexus Enform infotainment smartphone app suite, and a nine-speaker sound system.

The optional Luxury package adds heated and ventilated second-row seats and upgraded leather upholstery with contrasting stitching. You can also add 21-inch wheels and a heated steering wheel.

Some options are exclusive to the three-row LX 570 and include a head-up display, a wireless smartphone charger, a refrigerated coolbox under the front center armrest, a 19-speaker Mark Levinson sound system and Lexus Enform Remote with smart-device vehicle controls. There’s also an optional rear-seat entertainment system that includes a pair of displays mounted to the front seatbacks.

After a complete redesign for 2018, the Equinox will probably not receive any significant updates for the 2019 model year.

TRIM LEVELS AND FEATURES

The Equinox is positioned above the smaller Trax and below the larger Traverse, Tahoe, and Suburban in Chevrolet’s crossover and SUV lineup.

The 2018 Equinox trims should carry over into 2019 and include the base L, LS, LT, and Premier. Standard features on the base trim for 2018 included 17-inch wheels, a 7.0-inch multimedia touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, OnStar Guidance, and heated and power adjustable side view mirrors. The top Premier trim comes standard with 19-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights, heated front seats, eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, blind-spot monitoring with rear-cross traffic alert, a hands-free liftgate, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen.

PERFORMANCE AND FUEL ECONOMY

The 2018 powertrains should carry over and include a 170-hp 1.5-liter turbo-four, a 252-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four, and a 1.6-liter turbodiesel I-4 that produces 137 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic backs the 1.5-liter turbo-four while the 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine and the 2.0-liter turbo-four uses a nine-speed automatic. All powertrains come standard with front-wheel drive and are available with all-wheel drive. In 2018, EPA-rated fuel economy numbers ranged from 22/28 mpg city/highway with the AWD 2.0-liter turbo-four to 28/39 mpg with the front-drive turbodiesel.

SAFETY

Driver-assist safety tech will likely continue into 2019 unchanged. Chevrolet’s safety tech on the Equinox includes forward collision alert, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring with lane change alert, and rear-cross traffic alert. We hope the automatic emergency braking system is improved to a wider range of speeds.

A surround vision camera system and a rear seat reminder feature are also available on the Equinox. OnStar also offers several safety services including automatic crash response, emergency services, roadside assistance, and stolen vehicle assistance.

TECHNOLOGY

The Equinox’s tech will likely carry over into 2019 with a standard 7.0-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that can be upgraded to an 8.0-inch touchscreen that adds SiriusXM satellite radio and an optional navigation system. The upgraded audio system is an optional seven-speaker Bose system. A 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot is available and the myChevrolet mobile app allows the owner to start/stop the engine, lock/unlock the doors, honk the horn and flash the lights. The Teen Driver feature allows owners to monitor the driving characteristics of a new driver.

WHAT WE THINK

In 2018 Motor Trend SUV of the Year testing, we liked the Equinox’s spacious back seat and competent road manners and handling. The optional 2.0-liter turbo-four provided plenty of power and the nine-speed transmission shifts well. However, we didn’t like the poorly placed, dimly lit, and driver-selectable all-wheel-drive switch or “its suspect build quality: The door sheet metal flexes if you gently brush against it, the hatchback creaks when opened and closed, and a weird, booming sound emanates from the back of the cabin at highway speeds.”

The Lexus ES 300h comes well-equipped without needing anything else, and it’s suitable if you’re looking for luxury on a budget. But we recommend getting the Luxury trim, which adds leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, wood interior trim, and ambient interior lighting. Hybrids typically fall into two price categories. On the lower end are fuel-sipping eco-hatchbacks. Pay more and you’ll open the doors to performance luxury vehicles, which use the electric motor’s extra power to produce enviable acceleration. The 2019 Lexus ES 300h is one of the few cars that compete in between. Its large, roomy cabin is undeniably more upscale than a standard hybrid’s, but its price is barely higher than that of the Toyota Avalon Hybrid upon which it is based. The Lexus can’t beat its German rivals in terms of outright speed, but it undercuts the competition by thousands of dollars, and its modest four-cylinder engine is undeniably more fuel-efficient.

The ES 300h and the similar V6-powered ES 350 are redesigned for 2019. The sedan is longer, lower and wider than its predecessor, allowing for an increased wheelbase to give it more passenger legroom. The relocated battery pack, now residing under the rear seats, means the ES 300h has the same trunk space as the ES 350.

Inside, many of the touch points have been lifted from more expensive Lexuses, giving the ES an even more premium vibe than before. The technology interface continues to be a sore spot, though the availability of Apple CarPlay makes it less aggravating than in years past. Still, the touchpad controller is more finicky and less precise than the knob controller favored by rivals.

The 2019 Lexus ES 300h is a marked improvement over its predecessor, with a nicer interior and more passenger and cargo room. It doesn’t have many direct competitors — the 2019 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is the only other like-minded luxury midsize in this price range — and we think buyers looking to step up from everyday hybrids will enjoy its enticing blend of luxury and value.

2019 Lexus ES 300h configurations

The 2019 Lexus ES 300h is a midsize luxury sedan sold in three main trim levels with numerous available features packages and stand-alone options. Note that some options and configurations may be limited depending on where the car is purchased.

The ES 300h features a hybrid powertrain (a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired to an electric motor) that produces 215 total system horsepower. Those who prefer a bit more oomph under the hood are encouraged to check out the similar V6-powered 2019 Lexus ES 350.

Standard features on the 2019 Lexus ES 300h include 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, a sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a digital instrument panel, dual-zone automatic climate control, selectable driving modes, power-adjustable front seats, simulated-leather upholstery, onboard Wi-Fi, an 8-inch central display, three USB ports, and a 10-speaker audio system with a CD player and satellite radio.

Every ES 300h also comes with a wealth of advanced safety features, including a rearview camera, automatic high-beam control, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and mitigation, and a pre-collision warning system with automatic emergency braking.

On the base ES, you can order the optional Premium package, which adds automatic wipers, a power-adjustable steering wheel, driver-seat memory settings, and heated and ventilated front seats.

The Luxury trim includes those upgrades, plus heated mirrors, sound-reducing side windows, leather upholstery, ambient lighting and genuine wood trim. The Ultra Luxury package pulls out all the stops with hands-free trunk release, upgraded leather upholstery, a power rear sunshade, manual rear side sunshades, and special chassis dampers that help absorb vibrations when cornering.

Notable stand-alone options include 18-inch wheels, a heated steering wheel, adaptive suspension dampers, a panoramic sunroof, a head-up display, a 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, rear pedestrian alert with automatic braking, a 360-degree parking camera, and a wireless charging pad. An optional navigation system is paired with a larger 12.3-inch display screen and Apple CarPlay functionality.
