The clean, straightforward design of the Renault Scenic Boot Space Dimensions is let down only by the turbo model’s excessive add-ons.

The Renault Scenic scores an early victory over rivals, thanks to its class-leading boot space. Depending on how much you need to carry, you can slide the rear bench forward or backwards to prioritise either carrying capacity or rear leg room. READ ~ Bmw X1 Facelift 2019 Pictures

Even with the bench slid all the way back, though, taller adults may find themselves with less leg space than is ideal. The floor is also quite high, meaning taller individuals will find their knees getting in the way of the folding tables. There are cubbies under the floor, but we do wonder if a lower footwell would have been better. Either way, there are certainly more spacious rivals. The glovebox is rather small, too, with the fuse box taking up a large amount of space.

It’s not all bad. Most models get a sliding centre console that has loads of room for a family’s clutter. It also has a 12V and two USB sockets for front-seat passengers, and the same again for those in the back. As for the sliding bit, it’s good for separating quarrelling kids in the rear quarters, although it does impede the folding of the seats. All but the entry-level model gets a rear bench that folds down electrically; this is controlled from the boot or via the infotainment screen.

Cost & verdict

In terms of pricing, the Scenic competes with the Ford C-Max 2020 and Citroën C4 Picasso. It’s slightly cheaper than the more premium and better-equipped BMW 2 Series Active Tourer but more expensive than the Volkswagen Golf SV. It is significantly cheaper than the seven-seat Volkswagen Touran, although if you’re considering that you’ll probably want to look at the Grand Scenic instead.

The 1.6-litre diesels are competitive on tax and emissions regardless of whether you go for the manual or higher-powered auto. Better still is the 1.5-litre diesel, which cuts CO2 emissions to just 100g/km. Business users will be most interested in the Hybrid Assist model that manages CO2 emissions of just 92g/km. The new 1.3-litre petrol models are less impressive, with both achieving 122g/km.

All but entry-level Expression+ models get sat-nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring and electrically folding rear seats. The top two models get bigger touchscreens with a Bose sound system and a reversing camera, but they look pricey. Renault came in just below average on our latest reliability survey, so it’s handy that you get a four-year/100,000-mile warranty.

All Scenics get automatic emergency braking as standard, while a fatigue alert system is available from Dynamique Nav trim and above. For more advanced systems such as lane-keeping assist, you’ll need to fork out for the safety pack.

That said, even the entry-level Scenic scored well in its Euro NCAP crash test in 2016, gaining a full five stars and performing particularly well in the adult and child occupant protection categories (scoring 90% and 82% respectively).

Security experts Thatcham Research awarded the Scenic five out of five for guarding against being stolen and four out of five for resisting being broken into.

The best value in Renault Scenic Boot Space Dimensions is a base model with manual gearbox, but it’s still decently priced after adding fancy audio, leather, and a moonroof.
