Infiniti Q50 Red Sport Interior Review

OVERVIEW

The Infiniti Q50 is targeted at the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Like the majority of its competitors, the Q50 is a sedan that seats five and puts its power down through the rear wheels, and all-wheel drive is optional.

History

Reinvented as the Infiniti G35 in the early 2000s, the Q50 now rides on a platform that’s shared with many cars including the Infiniti QX50, QX70, and the Nissan 370Z. Before the G35 (available as a coupe and sedan) was introduced, however, Infiniti used the G name on a front-drive entry-level premium four-door. Once the automaker took aim at the 3 Series with the G35 on a rear-drive platform, the car won Motor Trend’s Car of the Year award.

“Superb powertrain, maybe the best available in this price range,” we said about the G35. We called the car capable and confidence-inspiring, and said the two-door was “the best-looking new sport coupe on the road today.” Overall, we noted the car offered “balance, poise, [and] good driver feedback,” and suggested that “the G35 will keep the folks in Munich working overtime.”

The Infiniti G was redesigned in 2007 with the coupe adopting the G37 name first when it received a new 3.7-liter V-6. The sedan later received the G37 name when it received the new engine, and a convertible model was also introduced. A seven-speed automatic transmission replaced the five-speed unit and, from 2011 to 2012, a base model with a 2.5-liter V-6 called the G25 was sold and a higher-performance variant called the IPL G37 was powered by a version of the 3.7-liter V-6 with a small power bump. Since the introduction of the Q50, the G37 model it replaced was renamed the Q40. Offered as a lower-cost entry-level model until the QX30 arrived, the still-powerful Q40 stayed unchanged until it was discontinued in 2015. The G37 coupe and convertible, on the other hand, were renamed the Q60.

The Latest Generation

Introduced in 2014, the Infiniti Q50 debuted with the same 3.7-liter V-6 and seven-speed automatic transmission as its predecessor. Although the outgoing G37/Q40 was available with a six-speed manual, the Q50 is automatic-only. A hybrid variant is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 coupled to an electric motor for a total output of 360 hp. Infiniti’s latest infotainment system with a two-screen layout also debuted in the Q50.

The refreshed Q50 was introduced for the 2016 and with it came with two new engines, a 208-hp Mercedes-sourced 2.0-liter turbo-four and Nissan’s new VR family 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6, which comes in 300-hp and 400-hp guises. Infiniti also revealed a new version of its Direct Adaptive Steering steer-by-wire system originally introduced in the 2014 model. In a First Test, that the Q50, especially in the 400-hp Red Sport 400 model, accelerates effortlessly with minimal turbo lag. The new Direct Adaptive Steering system is fine for everyday driving. However, in Sport mode, we noted that “the wheel feels artificially heavy, like there’s something pushing back.”

Why You’d Consider One

If you want something different from the usual German entry level luxury suspects, the Infiniti Q50 fits the bill. The Q50 Red Sport 400 offers plenty of power and tech in an attractive design.

Why You’d Look Elsewhere

We’re still not sure whether the Q50 is a luxurious sports car or a sporty luxury car. In Red Sport 400 trim, the ride is a bit stiff for a luxury car, but it’s not particularly rewarding to drive, either.

Hyundai Imax Interior Engine

The Elite is the top of the range of two and it comes in diesel only. So how was it – besides large – while driving around for the week and what did my family think of it? Let’s have a look.

I was pleasantly surprised by the smooth drive in the iMax. Firstly, I thought it was going to feel huge while driving and turning corners, but the turning circle in the iMax is actually smaller than a lot of mid to large SUVs I’ve driven. So turning corners is instant – it happens as soon as you turn the wheel – and making U-turns is actually a cinch, which I really didn’t expect. That gets a big tick from me.

There’s a 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine, so there was a good amount of power to get up hills. (Note, I did not drive the car with a full load of people and luggage, that may change things somewhat.) But hooning around with just two children and not much else in the back it was a very cruisy drive. It’s a diesel so you will hear the engine chugging along most of the time, which you kind of get used to.

And while it’s big (and wide), as long as you’re aware of your size you won’t have much trouble manoeuvring into parking spaces. It’s high – 1.925m, so just know that and be sure the carpark you’re entering can take it. I was fine in my local Westfield and was able to manoeuvre into spots with relative ease. There’s a reversing camera and while it’s not super high res, it will show you what’s behind you which is important in a van like this.

I felt a bit like my dad this week, driving the iMax around! He’s a builder and he has a van, and I just felt like I was channeling him all week. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.

There’s a 7.0-inch multimedia touchscreen and the iMax comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – just plug your phone in and you’re all set up with main apps from your phone streaming directly through the screen. You can use maps, play music with Spotify and use voice control to make phone calls and dictate text messages which means you never have to touch your phone and you won’t get in trouble while driving! Before you ask, no, you cannot use Instagram through the touchscreen.

The Hyundai iMax Elite comes in at $48,490. Fuel consumption is around 8.8 litres for every 100km which is not bad for a car of this size, if you’re always driving with eight people (and if not, carpool!).

Hyundai offers a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty with services needed every 12 months or 15,000kms.

Fiat Ducato 2019 Exterior and Interior

When the Fiat Ducato was launched, it very much slid under the radar. There was no fanfare and no gimmicks. It just arrived and began delivering. That’s part of the reason why the Ducato has become such a phenomenal success in the large van sector – not that you’ll notice many of them around, and that’s because it’s most commonly used as a motorhome.

It’s also a shared product with the Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Relay. They, too, are popular in the motorhome sector, but it’s the Ducato that has stolen a march on its rivals. That’s not to say it doesn’t make a competent van too. A high payload capacity is, after all, one of the reasons why so many body builders use vans for motorhomes, the other being that, unlike the Peugeot and the Citroën, the Fiat comes with a choice of engines and power outputs. Fiat’s own Multijet II diesel engine technology provides power across the range, with outputs from 115bhp to 177bhp. Previously available with a choice of two engines (a 2.3 and a 3.0), the Ducato now has a downsized 2.0-litre unit for the entry-level 115bhp option and a revised 2.3 with 130bhp, 150bhp or 177bhp outputs. The 150bhp engine is also available as an ultra-efficient EcoJet option that improves fuel economy to a claimed 47.9mpg.

The Ducato is available in more than 10,000 different configurations, with four body lengths and three body heights. Sizes L1H1 to L3H2 constitute the regular vans, while a heavier-duty Ducato Maxis is available in L2H2 up to L4H3 sizes. There’s also the option of a Comfort-Matic automatic gearbox, available on all models except the entry-level engine.

Competition for the Ducato comes in the form of the Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter and Nissan NV400, not to mention its own Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Relay family members.

As well as a panel van, the Ducato is available as a platform and chassis cab (used for those motorhome conversions), dropside, three-way tipper, crew van and minibus. The Ducato is available only with front-wheel drive.
